How to Understand and Engage With Cinematic Photography?

Let's jump into the immersive world of cinematic photography.

Growing up in cities with a rich visual culture, I've spent my entire life surrounded by various visual media. From bright billboards in busy city centers to inspiring art exhibitions in prestigious galleries, I've learned to appreciate how images elicit emotions and tell stories.

But when it comes to photography, nothing beats the effect of cinematic photos that take us to another world and fire up our imagination.

So, what makes a photo "cinematic"?

Simply put, it's a photography style that aims to imitate the visual language of films. This can show in various ways, such as using shallow depth of field for a dreamy or ethereal look or incorporating dramatic lighting for tension and mood. Other essential factors include strong composition, symmetry or leading lines, and attention to color and tonality.

Cinematic photography is also known for its storytelling aspect. Whether capturing a dramatic scene or a calm, solitary figure, cinematic photos pull us in and make us imagine what came before or what might come next.

But just because a photo is cinematic doesn't necessarily mean it carries meaning. That's where visual literacy comes in - it's up to us as viewers to use our critical thinking to understand the real message behind the image.

We should ask ourselves questions like, do the subject and composition work together to tell a story? Do the lighting and color enhance the mood being expressed? As viewers, it's essential to be cautious of false meaning created by a well-written description or story. Our job is to look beyond the words and see the photo for what it truly is.

So, how do we become more visually literate and connect with cinematic photography more meaningfully? Here are some tips to help you:

  • Study composition elements - Learn the basics of composition, such as balance, symmetry, and leading lines. This will help you recognize these elements in photos and understand their impact on the message conveyed.

  • Observe light and shadow - Light is a strong tool for creating mood and shaping our views of a photo. Notice the direction and quality of light, and think about how it contributes to the mood and atmosphere.

  • Consider the context - Context is crucial in understanding the message behind a photo. Who is the photographer? What is their purpose? What's the historical or cultural background? By considering these factors, you'll better understand the message being conveyed.

  • Explore other photographers' work - By exposing yourself to the work of other photographers, you'll broaden your visual vocabulary and appreciate the art of cinematic photography even more.

  • Practice, practice, practice - The best way to improve your visual literacy is to keep looking at photos and asking questions. Challenge yourself to look deeper into an image and consider its deeper meaning.

It is important to note, however, that not all cinematic photos need to look the same, and it is still possible to identify a photographer's style even if their work may vary in subject matter and visual appearance.

Understanding the technical elements that a photographer uses consistently in their work, such as lighting techniques, color palettes, type of shot, motifs, themes, or compositional patterns, can develop a deeper appreciation for the photographer's artistic vision and how they choose to tell their stories through their images. Whether through bold and daring imagery or soft and dreamy shots, every photographer has a unique voice, and it's our job to listen and understand it.

So there you have it! Cinematic photography is a powerful tool for visual storytelling that can transport us to another world. But as viewers, we must use our critical thinking and visual literacy to truly understand the message behind the images. So the next time you come across a stunning cinematic photo, take a moment to ask what it's trying to say. And remember, don't be swayed by a captivating description - let the image do the talking.
